HUNTSVILLE, Ala. —
Last week, Mae Jemison defeated Lawrence County 54-21. The Jaguars earned their second victory of the season, propelled by the efforts of Kel Woods.
“He's our leader,” said Mae Jemison Head Football Coach, Harold Wells. “He's our driver. If he goes, the offense goes. So, just having an impact player like that, to rely on week in and week out has meant volumes for us this year.”
Woods posted 339 rushing yards and scored 5 touchdowns, four on the ground, and one passing. His production earned Woods our latest First Down Friday Night MVP sponsored by Whataburger.
“I can't think of a better person who deserves it at this point in the season,” said Wells. “He's proving that he's the guy we need to go to later in the season.”
Woods is a dual threat quarterback who values speed. So, the players that left an impression on him are not surprising.
“I would say Michael Vick had a good influence on me,” said Woods. “Even though I wasn't playing quarterback at that time. I like a little bit of Michael Vick. Lamar Jackson now.”
“I've been running the option my whole career,” said Wells. “And if I had to say, he's in the top one or two of running the option. Having the instinct of getting that ball in the endzone, whether it's 60 or 4 yards, he knows how to get it in the endzone.”
