Hazel Green Girls Basketball breaks AHSAA win streak record

The Lady Trojans have not lost since Dec. 19, 2020

HAZEL GREEN, Ala. — The Hazel Green Girls Basketball team put its name in the history books on Saturday by defeating Riverdale High School (TN) 76-7.

With the victory, the Lady Trojans have won an AHSAA record 87 consecutive games, breaking the previous win streak record set by Lauderdale County from 2013-2015.

"The streak is great. It's something that's great for our program and Hazel Green itself," said Hazel Green Girls Basketball Head Coach Tim Miller. "And it makes you think, 'okay, did that just really happen over the last three years?' I guess it did."

The Lady Trojans last lost a game on Dec. 19, 2020, when they dropped a tight 50-47 contest to Ensworth (TN).

Despite the record-breaking win being years in the making, the Lady Trojans made it clear that they have bigger aspirations.

"We haven't been talking about [breaking the record], said Hazel Green Junior Guard Sydney Steward. "It's just not what we're focused on right now. We're really focused on the state championship at the end of the year and making sure that we get there. The record is just something that came along with it."

The Lady Trojans have won the last five 6A state championships and are next in action on Tuesday, Jan. 31 versus Hoover.

The Lady Buccaneers are (27-1) so far this season. They are the two-time reigning 7A girls basketball state champions and have also won four of the last six state titles.

Tip-off between the Trojans and Bucs is set for 6 o'clock at Hoover High School.
