Two Grissom golfers lead the pack in AHSAA Sub-State golf action Monday

Grissom’s Tyler Watts Fires a 9-under 63 to lead the Pack in AHSAA Sub-State Golf Action Monday

Defending Class 7A state boys’ golf champion Vestavia Hills and rival Spain Park tied for the North 3 Sub-State title – earning both a spot in next week’s AHSAA State Golf Championships at Auburn.


The Rebels and Jaguars each finished 4-under as a team with identical 292 team scores in the tourney played at Timberline Golf Club in Calera.


In the individual play, Grissom freshman golf sensation Tyler Watts shot an incredible 9-under par 63 to earn one of the two individual spots from the North 3 qualifiers for the state tourney. One stroke back of the low medalist was Spain Park’s Chase Kyes, who finished 8-under 64. Watts set an junior golf record two years ago with a round of 61 in a summer event.


Jay Clemmer led Vestavia Hills, which will going for its third straight 7A state title next week, shooting a 1-under 71. Earning the other at-large spot was Jack Mitchell of James Clemens, who fired a 3-under 69.


In the Class 7A North 4 girls’ sub-state tourney, also held at Timberline Golf Course, had some impressive rounds as well with Huntsville edging past city rival Grissom by four strokes shooting 6-over-par to finish at 222. The Tigers had a 226 team total to finish second. Both teams advance to the state tourney next week. Hewitt-Trussville was a close third at 229, and Spain Park finished 13 strokes back at 235.


Grissom’s Klare Jamison shot 5-under 67, and Gabi Nicastro of Huntsville was one stroke back at 4-under 68. Hewitt-Trussville’s Morgan Hopper and Aubrey Payne captured the two individual berths for next week’s state tourney with strong scores of 73 and 75, respectively.


Two other players turned in 2-under par 70 rounds in their respective Sub-State tourneys.


Annine Harper of Whitesburg Christian finished 2-under to win low medalist honors at the Class 1A/2A North 1 boys’ Sub-State tourney played at Cullman’s Cross Creek Golf Course. He earned an individual berth in next week’s state tourney. North Sand Mountain and Athens Bible finished 1-2 with rounds of 319 and 320.


A.J. Bradford and Luke Davis each had 1-under 71 rounds for ABS along with Winston County’s Tyden Steele, who earned the other individual qualifier berth. William Maples’ 76 led North Sand Mountain.


Alabama Christian’s Julie Waldo carded a 2-under 70 for low medalist honors at the Class 1A/3A girls’ South 1 Sub-State tourney at Dothan’s RTJ Highland Oaks Golf Course. 

Tuscaloosa Academy won the team title with a round of 230, and Houston Academy clinched the second state tourney team berth with a 285 total. Tuscaloosa Academy’s Anna Christian Beeker shot a 1-over 73 to finish second to Waldo.
