JACKSON, Mississippi — Earlier this morning Jackson State University Vice President & Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson named former AAMU women's basketball coach, Margaret Richards as the new head coach.
On the JSU Tigers website, Robinson says, "I am excited to welcome Margaret Richards to Jackson State as our next head women's basketball coach. She is no stranger to the Southwestern Athletic Conference and success. While she has been in the conference, she has taken a program from the bottom of the standings to a contender and when you look at leaders of your program that's what you want. Our program has been at the top of the conference for the last five years and we want to stay there, and I believe that we have brought in the right person to do just that."
Richards, coming from Mercer, has a hefty 19 years of collegiate coaching under her belt and served as AAMU's head coach for eight years previously.
According to Jackson State, Richards lead the Bulldogs to nearly 100 wins and had six appearances in the SWAC tournament including a visit to the semifinals in 2019-20 season. Richards also lead AAMU to receiving six all-conference honors, including a pair of first-team selections.
Richard says she's excited to get started and according to JSU Tigers website, she says, "When you look at the landscape of our sport in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, the standard over the last five years has been Jackson State. I am humbled, and honored, to be given this opportunity to serve the young women of our program and the Jackson State community. I understand the expectations and can't wait to get to work."
