HOMEWOOD, Ala. — No. 4-seed UAH won its fifth conference tournament title on Sunday as the Chargers upended No. 2-seeded Union, 86-72, in the 2022 Gulf South Conference Championship presented by TicketSmarter.
UAH converted 31-of-65 from the field, including 10-of-28 from three-point range. The Chargers also made 14-of-20 from the free throw line, while finishing with a 41-37 advantage on glass and tallying 17 steals. Union meanwhile shot 22-for-57 from the floor, while completing 14-of-38 from behind the arc.
The Chargers finished with four double-digit scorers. Chaney Johnson, who named to the All-Tournament team, led the way with a game-high 27 points behind 11-of-19 shooting. Luke Burnett netted 20 points with 7-of-13 from the field, including 5-for-10 from long range. Daniel Saylor chipped in with 10 points. All-Tournament member and Most Outstanding Player, CJ Williamson finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds and four steals.
Tyree Boykin garnered All-Tournament honors, after scoring a team-high 23 points behind 7-of-23 shooting, which was highlighted by a 7-of-18 clip from three-point range. Tylandrius Park followed with 21 points as he went 6-for-15 from the field and 3-for-8 from deep.
Also named to the GSC All-Tournament team was West Alabama’s Justin Allison and PJay Smith from Lee.
With the win, Alabama Huntsville secured the GSC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Championship. The full 64-team field, including next week’s regional tournament will be unveiled later tonight with the NCAA Selection Show set for 10:30 pm ET.
