Boeing has issued layoff notices to another 396 employees in Washington state, according to the Washington Employment Security Department.
The layoffs could impact employees at the company's locations in Bremerton, Auburn, Everett, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Kent, Puyallup, Renton, Seattle and Tukwila. Their separation date - their last pay period with the company - will be on Feb. 21. These layoffs add to over 2,000 Washington jobs the company has cut so far this year.
ESD received notice of the layoffs Monday.
This is one in a number of rounds of layoff notices that the company has issued since mid-November. Boeing announced in October that it would cut 10% of its workforce to align with the "financial reality" of the company. The aerospace manufacturer has not offered any details about what types of jobs it's cutting, only saying that the cuts impact executives, managers, union and non-union employees.
SPEEA, the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, has confirmed that over 600 of their employees have been impacted by the layoffs.
The company did say that machinists represented by IAM District 751, who work on some of the company's most profitable jet models, will not be impacted by the layoffs despite a months-long strike that hurt Boeing financially. S&P Global estimated the picket action could have cost Boeing $1 billion a month with manufacturing lines largely brought to a halt. The company's credit rating is also in jeopardy of being downgraded to junk status.
Boeing has faced steep financial losses since 2018, when two fatal jet crashes were linked to the company's autopilot system. A door plug blowout from earlier this year has also contributed to the company's money troubles.
