ALDOT needs your help! Proposal to revamp South Memorial Parkway Corridor underway

The deadline to submit public input is November 1.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) needs your help! A proposal is underway to make big changes along the South Memorial Parkway corridor.

This proposal includes Veterans Drive Southeast to the south of Weatherly Road in the city of Huntsville and ALDOT wants you to have an opportunity to offer public input.

As more people move to Madison County, we can expect more changes in traffic!

The Alabama Department of Transportation is looking to change our roadways in Huntsville.

“[The proposal] includes multiple changes that would improve traffic flow and safety for motorists, " said ALDOT Public Information Officer Seth Burkett.

Burkett said work on our roadways is needed to keep up with the change.

“We have a large backlog of projects in this state that we need to be up to date, to really meet our current demands,” said Burkett.

“Thanks to Rebuild Alabama, we're finally beginning to really chip away at that. But, you know, we have needs, and those needs are certainly growing for an area like Huntsville that continues to grow,” said Burkett.

"There are several tracks of right-of-way, that are being acquired for this project,” added Burkett.

Rights-of-ways, which is residential or commercial property acquired to the state include, “For slopes, shoulders things like that, sometimes we might have retention ponds or something there,” said Burkett.

“We reach out to those that would be impacted the property owners who we need to acquire right away from, and discuss it with them, go through the process, and let them know how all of this is going to work. And, you know, then there's appraisals done, and we make an offer based on fair market value,” added Burkett.
