SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — All the rain dumped by these storms this month have caused widespread flooding throughout the Tennessee Valley.
Our WZDX News reporter has more from EMA officials in one county on what to expect in the coming days.
"We're having flooding down in Woodville off of County Road 130 and 119. Hollywood and County Road 105," says Jackson County EMA Deputy Director, Joshua Whitcomb.
Whitcomb says these are usual spots that get flooded. However he says there are challenges when multiple roads are flooded.
"Jackson County is the third largest county in Alabama, and we have over 2200 miles of roadway here. Sometimes when we have multiple roads that are flooded or deemed impassible we have a challenge to get barricades out to each and every site that we have," says Whitcomb.
WZDX News reached out to the county engineer who says crews will place hazard signs they know a roadway will be impassable.
However, if there's damage to the roadway state troopers are involved and will barricade that route. In the meantime, officials say they'll continue to monitor the area.
"There's also been substantial amount of rain North of us so we're keeping an eye on the rivers and coordinate with the National Weather Service and local public safety agencies to keep accurate information flowing as close to the real time as we can," says Whitcomb.
Here's a message for people while on the road. "Pay attention to where you're going. Have more than one route to travel if you come across a roadway that's flooded or deemed impassible," says Whitcomb.
In Madison County, Ditto Landing has seen its fair share of flooding also.
The National Weather Service reported at least fifteen feet of flood water and is expected to crest to more than eighteen feet over the next few days from the Tennessee River.
Trails and the parking lot at the Ditto Landing Marina is completely submerged. People who are staying at the campgrounds were asked to evacuate.
"As the water level rise, we'll continue to cut off more areas of the property to keep people safe. The most available area is over at the Greenway. You'd reach that across from the Hobbs Island Pitt Stop, and once you come in there you can come to Greenway. We just ask that you not cross any barricades. We're trying to keep everyone safe as we go through this flood season," says Ditto Landing Marina Executive Director, Brandi Quick.
In a few weeks, the marina will partner with the Southeast Family YMCA for cleanup efforts on April 17th, from 8a-noon.
"On April 17th, the Southeast YMCA is helping us with scheduling a volunteer cleanup. So we want everyone to come out. They'll just have to sign in and we'll have plenty of materials to help them clean up," says Quick."
