Non-profit wants to help preserve veterans' legacies

The group aims to honor senior veterans and protect their legacies by keeping their stories alive and in schools. The group has turned their stories into curriculum.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — An organization that honors senior veterans also wants to help protect their legacies. It's actually the mission of the non-profit.

This group, called Honored Legacies, plans on doing this by having real, primarily sourced stories from veterans in school curriculum.

The group gave veterans a way to visit schools and tell their stories before the pandemic hit, now their focus is making these lessons accessible to teachers.

"What we've really focused on since the pandemic started is a website that we want to start for teachers and this website will have our veterans stories and little snippets of their stories with lesson plans and it will be for all subjects and all grade levels," said Co-Founder and President of Honored Legacies, Chris Batte.

Batte hopes that these lessons will be available in schools at the start of the next school year.

Honored Legacies also plans on highlighting a veteran every Sunday here in the Valley. The group will give a senior veteran the opportunity to throw the first pitch at a Rocket City Trash Pandas' game.
