HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Healing Steps Labyrinth on Whitesburg Drive is hosting a Suicide Prevention and Awareness Vigil this Saturday, Sept. 10, from 6-8 PM.
Healing Steps Labyrinth is partnering with Crisis Services of North Alabama and other community service providers. The groups hope to honor those lost to suicide and help family and friends who have have been affected by it. The candlelight vigil will take place at the Labyrinth and will be followed by a suicide prevention resources fair. The event is free and open to anyone affected by suicide.
According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, 804 Alabamians died by suicide in 2019. This is a rate that is 16.4 percent higher than the death rate by homicide within the state.
In addition to the candlelight vigil, the Healing Steps Labyrinth will be leading a labyrinth walk and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church will host a resource fair in their parish hall.
Veriditas describes a labyrinth as a place which “…quiets the mind, opens the heart and grounds the body.” It is a form of active meditation that allows a person to work through the challenges they may be facing.
