HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — UPDATE 3/20/2020: Huntsville City Schools is utilizing more buses in an effort to remove transportation barriers for children who need food.
Not only is the school system expanding its free meal distribution to more areas in the community, they are also including both breakfast and lunch for all youth 18 and under.
Students are invited to “Look for the bus, listen for the horn, and receive a free meal.” Buses will be driving slowly through the distribution areas and announcing their arrival by sounding their horns. Meals will be handed to students from the school bus door.
Meals will be delivered weekdays between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. in the following areas: Cherokee Bend Apartments, Squaw Valley Apartments, Edmonton Heights Apartments, Meadow Hills Apartments, Northwoods Homes, Shady Grove Mobile Homes and Merrimac Manor Mobile Homes. This service will last through Friday, March 27, 2020.
Huntsville City Schools will continue their free curbside lunch service for all youth, ages 18 and under, at four participating school sites.
The lunch service is going on now and will go through Friday, March 27 from 10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Current participating school sites include:
- Lee High School
- Lakewood Elementary
- Morris Elementary/Middle
- Chaffee Elementary

UPDATE: Starting Friday, March 20, Huntsville City Schools will be offering two school bus delivery options from 11:00 a.m. to noon.
One school bus will be parked in the Cherokee Bend Apartment Complex on 4177 Newsome Rd.
The second bus will be driving a continuous loop through the Edmonton Heights neighborhood - Wilkerson Drive, around Melody Drive, and back to Salem Drive, and exiting Wilkerson Drive.
The bus delivery service will run from Friday, March 20 - Friday, March 27 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (Weekdays only)

In order to support students during school closings, Huntsville City Schools is providing drive-thru Grab-n-Go lunches for all youth, ages 18 and under, at school sites around the city. There is no cost for these meals.
The lunch service will start March 17 and go through Friday, March 27 from 10:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

- Lakewood Elementary – 3501 Kenwood Dr., Huntsville, AL 35810
- Morris Elementary/Middle – 4801 Bob Wallace Rd., Huntsville, AL 35805
- Dawson Elementary – 5308 Mastin Lake Rd., Huntsville, AL 35810
- Chaffee Elementary – 7900 Whittier Rd, Huntsville, AL 35802
- Highlands Elementary – 2500 Barney Terrace, Huntsville, AL 35810
- Sonnie Hereford Elementary – 2755 Wilson St., Huntsville, AL 35816
- McDonnell Elementary – 4010 Binderton Pl., Huntsville, AL 35805
Drive-thru and walk-up service is available. There is a separate meal station for walk-up service.
School buildings are closed from Tuesday, March 17 through Friday, April 3.
