Alabamians celebrating a somewhat normal Memorial Day

This Memorial Day, Alabamians at Point Mallard Park were able to celebrate in a somewhat normal fashion with grilling and a day in the sun.

DECATUR, Ala. — With COVID-19 vaccines becoming more and more available, Alabamians are starting to be able to live life normally.

This Memorial Day, Alabamians at Point Mallard Park were able to celebrate in a somewhat normal fashion with grilling and a day in the sun.

"We're real grateful to be out here. We're all vaccinated, we were able to spread out in the pavilion," said Alabamian Thyeis Irwin. "We're just grateful to be here, to be together, to be free, just with family."

People were able to enjoy food, family, sunshine and more.

Nearly 17 months after the COVID-19 pandemic hit, people are excited to return to a somewhat normal life.

"I feel great," said Sandra Parham." I feel like I'm in another world."

Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's director said it was safe for COVID-vaccinated people to enjoy most Memorial Day activities without a mask.

“If you are vaccinated, you are protected, and you can enjoy your Memorial Day,” Dr. Walensky reassured Americans.
