LAWRENCE COUNTY, ALABAMA, Ala. — An Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) helicopter helped rescue an injured hiker in the Sipsey Wilderness Area of Bankhead National Forest on Sunday afternoon.
According to ALEA, at around 12:06 p.m., aviation was called to assist in rescuing the hiker, who had broken an ankle and was unable to move due to the steep, wooded terrain.
The injured person, along with one medic, was hoisted into the helicopter and flown 4.2 miles to a nearby landing zone, where an ambulance was waiting to transport them to the hospital.
The helicopter then returned to the forest to lift two more medics to safety before heading back to the landing zone.
