ATHENS, Ala. —
Thursday, Athens City Council called a special meeting to talk about whether or not the city will make wearing masks mandatory.
The council made it clear that today’s meeting was just for discussion and for council members to hear what the community thinks about a masking ordinance.
Athens-Limestone Hospital Chief of Staff Dr. Paul Fry gave a brief presentation on the impact of the virus nation-wide and locally. Dr. Fry publicly advocates for a masking ordinance.
Locals were invited to speak. Some were in support of mandatory masks--- others were strongly opposed. Here’s some of what was said:
One man says, “Whatever we can do to prevent the spread of this disease.”
Another man says, “I put myself on the record. I support the masks.”
A local woman expresses concerns on the details of a masking ordinance and consequences. She says, “Putting this mandate out-- how can we enforce it?”
One man says the government shouldn't force citizens who aren't at high risk of COVID-19 to wear masks. He adds, “What authority does the city of Athens or any other state or local government have to infringe on the rights of healthy law abiding citizens?”
No vote was taken nor decision made at Thursday's meeting. Athens City Council members say they’ll review what was discussed- and reconvene for further steps in about a week or so.
