'Calling for Justice and Peace Rally' brings attention to Black women & police brutality

Community activists held a rally by paying special attention to Black women killed by police. Some organizers feel their stories are often ignored.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Community activists rallied together to bring awareness to local Black men and women killed by police, and with special attention to Black women.

The 'Calling for Justice and Peace Rally' was held at Big Spring Park East Saturday afternoon to remember Crystal Ragland, Dana Fletcher, and others nationwide.

The rally included guest speakers such as organizer Korey Wilson, Alabama NAACP President Benard Simelton, and United Women of Color Executive Director, Angela Curry. The Ragland family was also present with their attorney, Martin Weinberg.

Ragland, an Army veteran, was shot and killed last year in May at the Stadium Apartments by Huntsville Police after they say she was armed and told officers to "shoot her".

Ragland's family said she suffered from PTSD. Her sister, Brandie Robinson, says it's also important that the attention of Black women killed by police are not ignored.

"The media has focused so much on all the males, all the Black males that have been slaughtered at the hands of police. But, you don't hear so much about the females or it comes or it goes just as quickly as it came," says Robinson.

Leaders are also calling on law enforcement to be held accountable for the June protests.
