Decatur New Year's Day Polar Bear Plunge supports Meals on Wheels

DECATUR, Ala. — The Decatur New Year's Day Polar Bear Plunge is set to take place on January 1, 2022, at 12 p.m. benefitting the Meals on Wheels & More of Morgan County program.

The annual event will take place on the south side of the Tennessee River at the pier near Ingalls Harbor. According to the Community Action Partnership of North Alabama, the tradition started several years ago after Meals on Wheels volunteer Wayne Holliday jumped into the Tennessee River as a way to bring in the new year.

Each year, the event sees anywhere from 25 to 100 jumpers depending on weather conditions. The Morgan County Rescue Squad will be on deck to lend a hand to any jumpers. Participants ages 10 and younger are required to wear a life jacket if they are to take part in the event, and life jackets are encouraged for everyone else.

Additionally, t-shirts are sold at the event each year with proceeds being donated to the Meals on Wheels & More of Morgan County. You can purchase a shirt at the event for $15.
