Decatur Utilities to resume disconnects on June 22

With Decatur Utilities' lobby opening, officials caution DU will also resume disconnecting service for past due bills in mid-June.

DECATUR, Ala. — DU has reopened its Main Lobby for counter payments. You'll be able to pay your electric, gas or water bills again at Decatur Utilities' office on Central Parkway.

If you need to talk with someone in customer service there, you can do that too, but you'll need to make an appointment. You can also call 256-552-1400 and use Option 4.

Social distancing measures and safety precautions will be in place, and DU will limit the number of customers in the lobby. Even with the lobby open, utilities officials say it's safer to use contactless payment methods, including Automatic Bank Draft, postal mail, self-service kiosks, the Smart Hub app, online and by phone at 256-552-1400, Option 3.

The big change that's coming though is Decatur Utilities will resume disconnecting service for people who haven't paid their bills. DU put a pause on disconnects the past three months, but it will start disconnecting accounts again starting Monday, June 22.

If your bill is past due, contact Customer Service as soon as you can at 256-552-1400, Option 4. You can discuss possible payment arrangements and avoid disconnection. Decatur Utilities officials say if you can make partial payments along the way, that will help.

If you need help paying a bill, contact the Community Action Partnership of North Alabama (CAPNA). They've even relaxed some of their qualification guidelines due to Covid-19 to make more people eligible. Call CAPNA at 256-260-4050.
