HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Huntsville City Council at the council meeting on December 16 unanimously voted to approve the City Administration's redistricting plan.
The city's population was divided into five districts, each containing approximately 43,000 people. The city provided the following demographic breakdown per district based on the 2020 Census:
- District 1:
- Total Population - 43,524
- Percent White - 19.52%
- Percent Black - 68.95%
- Percent All Other - 11.53%
- District 2:
- Total Population - 43,197
- Percent White - 82.78%
- Percent Black - 6.43%
- Percent All Other - 10.79%
- District 3:
- Total Population - 42,498
- Percent White - 80.17%
- Percent Black - 6.57%
- Percent All Other - 13.26%
- District 4:
- Total Population - 43,666
- Percent White - 53.37%
- Percent Black - 26.45%
- Percent All Other - 20.18%
- District 5:
- Total Population - 42,185
- Percent White - 47.63%
- Percent Black - 37.84%
- Percent All Other - 14.53%
In total, the city council received four plans. The plans were presented and discussed at five public hearing meetings held throughout October and November at City Hall. Members of the public submitted three plans and the city's administration developed one plan they say was created using input from various city departments, the city council and the public.
