Madison County DA: Shooting by Huntsville officer was justified, saved lives

Police say the woman's injuries are not considered life-threatening.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Madison County District Attorney's Office has released preliminary findings on an officer-involved shooting that happened on August 24, at Rime Village in Huntsville. The incident, which involved the fatal shooting of Naimmikal Wayne Sanders, 38, of Decatur, is under ongoing investigation.

According to the District Attorney's Office, Sanders was shot and killed by a Huntsville Police Department (HPD) officer after he was seen firing at a fleeing woman and her child. The incident began just before 10 a.m. on August 24 at an apartment complex in the 6200 block of Rime Village Drive, Rime Village.

The report details that Sanders broke into a victim’s apartment, holding her and her toddler hostage at gunpoint. Security cameras captured the situation. When the victim escaped and ran outside, Sanders chased her, shooting her twice in front of an officer. Sanders then aimed his gun at the officer, who returned fire and fatally wounded Sanders. The incident was recorded by the officer’s body-worn camera.

The District Attorney's Office has stated that their preliminary review suggests the officer’s actions were justified and likely prevented further harm to the victim, her child, and himself. The office does not anticipate any action against the officer involved.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional details will be provided as they become available.
