MADISON COUNTY, ALABAMA, Ala. — Madison County School officials provided an update Wednesday about recent social media threats targeting local schools. According to an email sent to parents, schools will be on “heightened awareness” throughout the day.

The district says it is aware that Buckhorn High School, Hazel Green High School, and Central School were named in the social media threats.

In response, the school system sent an email to parents outlining the situation and the steps being taken.

The full email reads:

"Dear MCSS Families,

As we shared with you yesterday, we want to inform you that we have continued to receive information about nationwide threats to include schools in our system.

MCSS will remain with all campuses in Heightened Awareness status. Currently, we are aware of Buckhorn High School, Hazel Green High School, and Central School being named in these social media threats. In response, all MCSS schools will be placed under "Secure Your Area of Responsibility" from 12:30- 1:00 pm. This is a time when all students remain in their designated location. Visitors will be limited to previously scheduled meetings only for today.

In line with our safety procedures, we are collaborating closely with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office to verify the threat's credibility. We treat this as a high-priority issue, implementing additional safety measures on campus and deploying extra sheriff’s deputies until the situation is resolved.

We encourage you to play an active role in school safety by discussing its importance with your child and reminding them to report any concerns. Creating an environment where students feel safe and comfortable reporting suspicious behavior is essential for maintaining a secure school environment. The MCSS Safe Schools Tipline is available 24/7 at (256) 536-8355. Your involvement is crucial in ensuring the safety of our school community."
