HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The wait is over for lovers of fresh fruit and veggies. Oakwood Farms Market is officially open for shoppers.
Local leaders and the Oakwood University community celebrated the store's grand opening Wednesday morning. Leaders include Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, Huntsville City Council President Devyn Keith, Madison County Commissioner JesHenry Malone, and the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce.
Guests were welcomed with a variety activities like watching a live beehive, tasting foods, and sampling products.
Oakwood Farms Market is known for home grown produce, and locally based goods. Oakwood University President Leslie Pollard says his 'Vision 2020' that was initiated in 2011, is to serve Huntsville and the historically Black Adventist university in a healthy way.
"For us it feels great, because it gives us the opportunity to minister to our community, to serve our community. Black lives matter, but so does Black health, so does Black finances, so does Black family. All of these elements that make a person whole, they all matter. And so this is our part of holistic engagement with our community," says Pollard.
The market will be open until 8 p.m.
