HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Protesters plan to attend the Madison City Council tomorrow, where leaders have a meeting scheduled Monday evening. It's in response to the city cancelling a ceremony to honor the officers involved in the death of Dana Fletcher.
Last October, Fletcher was shot outside a Planet Fitness after officials say he was armed. His wife who was with him at the time of the shooting, says he wasn't armed.
The Madison County District Attorney ruled it was justified. Police Chief David Jernigan issued a statement; which included that he and Mayor Paul Finley 'immediately decided timing was not optimal.'
Protesters say the planned ceremony is disrespectful.
"In dispute for them even thinking of awarding officers involved with this atrocious act of violence versus a peaceful citizen, it just shows how disrespectful the city of Madison officials are for even thinking that it was okay to offer an award, a medal of honor, to people who took the life of a man," says Darwin Salaam, a close friend to the Fletcher family.
Protesters have been demonstrating every Sunday since last November.
