GERALDINE, Ala. — Geraldine High School reported Wednesday morning that a student was found with a gun.
In a statement shared on social media, the school assured the community that everyone is safe and there is no lockdown.
School officials confirmed that local and county authorities were notified and are handling the situation.
The student has been charged and is currently being transported to juvenile authorities.
Here’s the full statement from the school:
"As you know a student was found to have a loaded gun on campus today. The drills and protocols worked in terms of students reporting the situation to a teacher, who reported to me. Within less than five minutes of my being notified the student was in my office with the SRO and the gun was in our possession. There is much gossip and rumor already out in the community. Please help us calm the situation. No one was threatened and more importantly no one was injured. Concerning many asking why there was no lock down, we followed the guidelines given by law enforcement and the potential threat had been neutralized
The student has been charged and is currently being transported to Juvenile authorities as is the legal requirement.
After all charges have been completely carried out there will be due process hearings and all laws and local policies will be followed.
Every employee at Geraldine High School is concerned for the safety of each student and every other person on this campus. Many of you might be interested in knowing we are currently in the process of obtaining a security dog that will be trained to locate firearms and vapes. The dog is being trained now and our SRO will go through training later in the Spring and the dog will then be on campus full time."
We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
