Toyota Alabama starts production on new Tacoma engines

The i-FORCE 2.4-liter turbo engine line represents the plant’s sixth expansion, bringing the total investment to $1.5 billion.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Toyota is gearing up for the release of its new turbo engine. On February 21, Toyota Alabama celebrated the start of production of its i-FORCE 2.4-liter turbo engine line for the brand-new Tacoma. With a previous investment of $222 million, this new line aims to show Toyota’s dedication to providing diverse powertrain options.

Jason Puckett, president of Toyota Alabama, commented on the importance of this milestone, stating, “The completion of the i-FORCE 2.4-liter turbo engine line marks a significant milestone for Toyota Alabama and further supports job stability for our 2,000 employees.” Puckett also highlighted the plant's role in Toyota's hybrid future, noting that every line now includes engines for hybrid vehicles.

Globally, Toyota is continuing to reduce carbon and produce carbon-neutral products. The company plans to invest over $70 billion in vehicle electrification by 2030, the i-FORCE 2.4-liter turbo engine line represents the plant’s sixth expansion, bringing the total investment to $1.5 billion. 

According to Toyota, the plant achieved record production in 2023, assembling more than 777,000 engines for Toyota vehicles across North America. It manufactures engines for a variety of Toyota models, including the Tundra, Sequoia, Corolla, Tacoma, and RAV4. 

Last year, the company announced two significant initiatives: a $49 million solar array project in partnership with Huntsville Utilities and Toyota Tsusho, which will supply over 70 percent of Toyota Alabama’s energy needs, and grants of up to $6.7 million to support STEM education in Huntsville City Schools as part of the Toyota USA Foundation’s Driving Possibilities initiative.
