Meet Bear, the newest member of the Madison Police Department

The labrador retreiver is as cute as he is skilled in fighting crime.

MADISON, Alabama — Madison Police introduce their newest member of the department, Bear!

The Labrador Retreiver is trained to detect and locate electronic devices. Madison Police share that Bear will be especially helpful in cases involving crimes against children, as well as other major crimes.

The addition of Bear was made possible due to an anonymous donor who fully paid for the K9's acquisition, as well as his training and equipment.  The donation and sponsorship of Bear was brought to the Department through the non-profit O.U.R. Rescue (Operation Underground Railroad, Rescue), which supports law enforcement agencies with the fight against child exploitation and human trafficking.

Bear’s arrival is timely as MPD partners with the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force.

Bear will also serve as a therapy dog, applying trauma-informed practices on scene. "Many child exploitation criminals think they can beat the system with a good hiding spot for evidence. We want them to know that Bear is a formidable weapon against their crimes," says Police Chief Johnny Gandy. "We are incredibly grateful to the anonymous donor for supporting Bear through his training. Our community is safer with his service."

Detective Ted Thiele will serve as Bear's handler. The two work together, live together, and will serve the community as a team.

Madison Police share that Bear is a unique K9, as he is trained to be approachable while on the job. Thiele shares, "Bear can bring down the bad guys, but also provide comfort to victims." Bear's handler also states,"His impact is invaluable to helping to protect and rescue our most vulnerable population. Bear's skills are a critical tool to help us investigate and bring criminals to justice while also making a social-emotional impact on those around him."

Both Bear and Thiele will be visiting the community to educate groups on the canine's work.

Make sure to give Bear some well-deserved attention and belly rubs while he serves the community.
