HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A local fifth grader at Goldsmith-Schiffman Elementary School got big news today during an assembly at his school.
Dylan Montgomery won second place in the State Arbor Day Poster Contest.
He won a $75 cash prize, $100 for his teacher to use in the classroom, and a pizza party for his entire grade thanks to Operation Green Team.
Dylan, along with nearly 1,000 students in Huntsville, decorated a poster with the theme "Trees are Terrific…and Forests are Too."
Because his poster got a top spot in the contest, he heads to Montgomery tomorrow to plant a tree at the Alabama State Capitol with Governor Kay Ivey.
"I get to meet our governor Kay Ivey and get to keep a golden shovel and get to plant a tree with her," said Dylan. "It'll be a real honor. I was like really me? I was kind of like in shock."
This is the 20th consecutive year a Huntsville student has placed in the statewide contest.
