ATHENS, Ala. — Local businesses in Athens are excited to see the new changes happening in historic downtown area.
Artist Adam Stephenson and assistant Pamela Tellez Coria completed a large mural that will be the focal point for Merchants Alley. The name of the mural is 'Playing the Sound of the Wind'. This is a part of a bigger project to revitalize Main Street.
Once the entire project is complete, there will be tables and places for people to enjoy food and music.
This new addition is a part of the Art and Entertainment district where adults can enjoy drinks in their blue cups. Businesses around Merchant’s Alley are thrilled.
"There's so many wonderful restaurants and shops and just to have an increase in traffic because of all the work that's being done on the square," said Pat Madsen, sales associate at Garnets. I think it'll be a big boost to Athens."
Stephenson is excited to have a role in the project, and resonates closely with the theme of the mural.
"I myself am a musician and learned how to play multiple instruments under the guidance of my father," Stephenson explained. "My father passed away in November of 2020, and this mural is a beautiful opportunity to honor the musical heritage of my family.”
