HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — WZDX and the TEGNA Foundation, the charitable foundation sponsored by TEGNA Inc. (NYSE: TGNA), has awarded two area nonprofit organizations community grants totaling $7,500 to help their missions of service to the community.

Community grants in North Alabama are aimed at addressing needs made more urgent by the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, including housing, services for at-risk youth, hunger, education, and mental health care.

The two recipients of this round of community grants are 305 8th Street and United Women of Color.

305 8th Street will use their $2,500 grant for unbudgeted expenses in the waterproofing and addition of French drains to the basement level of one of the homes on their property. In addition, funds will help defray the cost of care for diverse disabled adults who reside in our Community challenged by cerebral palsy, mental disability, autism, brain injury and hearing impairment. 305 8th Street provides housing and service for adults with a variety of disabilities who do not qualify for other care programs.

United Women of Color will use their $5,000 grant for their youth development program to empower racial/ethnic minority middle school girls through relevant group discussion, exposure to character development and career roles through field trips and hands-on activities, community service and civic engagement that will encompass mentor-mentee relationships, leadership training, and real-life experience to build confidence, leadership skills, and goal setting for positive life choices. The grant will provide program support for project costs to carry out program activities, purchase materials and provide stipends for facilitators. The girls will be referred to the mentor program by United Women of Color members, community leaders and educators, and the community at large.

“We are proud to partner with WZDX to be a force for positive change in North Alabama,” said TEGNA President and CEO Dave Lougee. “We were recently named one of the 50 most community-minded companies in the United States for the second consecutive year by The Civic 50, an honor made possible by our people and their passion for serving the greater good in the local communities we serve.”

Previous local grant recipients include Crisis Services North Alabama and Harris Home for Children.

The TEGNA Foundation Community Grants program addresses the diverse local community needs in communities served by TEGNA. Most grants awarded fall into one of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Categories: Good Health and Well-Being, Quality Education, and Zero Hunger. Other goals supported include: No Poverty, Reduced Inequality, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Life Below Water, Peace and Justice, and Strong Institutions.

Grants are vetted by a committee of employees at each station, including the station general manager, and approved by the TEGNA Foundation Board of Directors. For information or to apply for a TEGNA Foundation Community Grant, click here.
